UTCX #5 Trick or Treat!
(November 1, 2010)On Halloween all the freaks come out to play. No where is that more true than at cyclocross races across the country. Even in conservative Utah the
Halloween weekend gets the biggest and weirdest crowds. This year nearly 500 disturbed souls descended upon Wheeler Farm for some Halloween
hi-jinx.
The course at Wheeler is always a favorite for racers and spectators. The clover leaf layout allows for easy spectating with
minimal movement. For the racers the addition of a huge new sandpit along the river bottom added a challenging new feature that is seldom seen
here in the high desert. Many a rider took an quick trip over the bars in the soft deep sand pit, those with the skill and the power were
rewarded with big gaps every lap.
In the Mens A race Bart Gillespie (Revolution) added insult to injury by going Deep Space 9 dressed as a
Hooters waitress. Alex Grant (Cannondal Factory) secured 2nd dressed as Spartacus over Kevin Hulick (Bikers Edge). What was most
impressive about the A race was the large number of riders who donned costumes for the event. It is refreshing to see that even the fastest of
the fast can embrace the spirit of the season.
In the Womens A there also a large number of ladies wearing costumes while also laying down
the watts. Kris Walker (Contender Bicycles) came from way back on lap 1 to overtake 2010 revelation Kelsey Bingham (Roosters) and Erica Powers
(Revolution). The ladies filed continues to produce some of the most exciting action of the day. Well done ladies, well done.
The real action on the course was in the Slyfox Cash Zone which this week was right in the middle of the sand pit. You really need to check
out this footage, it is long but well worth it. It is amazing what people will do for a dollar!
