Tested: ZeroGoo Fuel Injector

(October 21, 2010)

Ever crashed because you were reaching in your pocket to grab an energy gel? Well this may be the answer for you.

Mountain biking is a sport where you need to be focused all the time with your hands on the bars, making fueling more difficult than with other forms of cycling. But getting those calories is still extremely important and the more accessible your nutrition is the more it will be consumed. If you wear a hydration pack, chances are you end up drinking more water than you would with just bottles. This philosophy is exactly why so many cyclists wear Camelbaks now, simple, accessible hydration. But wearing one restricts access to needed gels stashed in those handy jersey pockets. Enter the ZeroGoo fuel injection system. Simply make a cut in the hose of your hydration pack and plug this bad boy in.

With it mounted nicely to your pack consuming calories has never been easier. Just flip the switch and suck from your bite-valve like usual. With a variety of flavors ZeroGoo’s Human fuel energy drink mixes nicely with plain water and adds needed nutrients. With the included additional empty gel bottles, ZeroGoo also allows the use of any other preferred energy gel. Making switching over to the system simple and keeping your stomach happy with a gel it likes.

ZeroGoo’s fuel injection system offers some benefits many riders may benefit from. It makes gel easily accessible while also making drinking water more appealing. Adding a subtle fruit flavor to the water often enticed me to gulp down more liquid than just plain water alone, but it seemed that taste lingered in the hose.

I did find setup of the system to be a little difficult, being unsure about placement of the unit and what would be comfortable while in a riding position. But once you cut your hose placement is pretty much permanent unless you try again with another hose.

Overall, this system does what it is supposed to and could be beneficial if solving a problem. If hydration and fueling are a issue for you, it is worth checking out. I wouldn’t say this product solved all my fueling problems because no matter what position I had the lever in I seemed to still get some of the gel, which often made a plain drink of water impossible to achieve. I found myself not drinking sometimes because I didn’t want the taste of the gel with my water.

MSRP: $25 for injector and one bottle of Human Fuel, $27 for additional 12-pack of Human Fuel drink

The ZeroGoo injector velcros securely to any hydration pack shoulder strap.Once mounted in the right place it sits cleanly out of the way while offering easy access to fuel.As you can see there is a bit of a learning curve that comes along with mounting the injector. Mount it too high on the strap and it is in the way. Mount it too low and its also in the way.
