Mavic released a full clothing line in 2010 and has continued to produce top-notch apparel products for both the road and mountain bike crowds. The Stratos short is Mavic’s answer to the usually heavy, burdensome baggy mountain bike shorts. Constructed from an extremely lightweight breathable fabric, the Stratos is comfortable even on warm days.
With very few pockets these shorts may not be the best option if you utilize shorts pockets for tools, tubes, or anything bigger than an energy bar for that matter. But the shorts succeed at being exactly what they were designed as, a minimalist XC baggy short.
The fit is good, snug up top, length is right at the middle of the knee (I have a 32” inseam and wore a Med short). The bottom of the shorts could be a little snugger, but I guess they are meant to offer more ventilation through the bottom opening.
I was extremely surprised how durable the lightweight material really was, after a hard crash on some sharp granite, my hip was completely raw, but the shorts showed absolutely no sign of wear or abrasion. With the abuse mountain bike shorts take, it is good to see a company focusing on the full spectrum, like Mavic has with the Stratos.
Overall, the Stratos is my go-to short for most days on the mountain bike. They are light and breathable while still being durable enough to stand up to daily abuse. Fit is good overall, with a Velcro adjusting waist, they are easily adjusted on the trail. The shorts can be purchased as a set with a removable inner short, or can be purchased just as the outer short. They are available in two colors black or gray and can be purchased from any authorized Mavic dealer.
