Light & Motion Urban 400
Weight: 112 grams
On longer solo rides in the backcountry, I always throw a lightweight headlamp in my pack for backup “daylight” extension. That little light has saved my ass more than once, making due on short exits and emergency bushwhacks, but it’s not very effective in brightening the trail enough to bomb out quickly. Now I have the Light & Motion Urban 400 that lets me rest easy—maybe even have a little fun—when I’m in a bind past dusk and need some light to exit safely.
The cordless, rechargeable Urban 400 is intended for commuting but serves well for short nighttime trail rides, too, with four beam options (high/400 lumens; medium/200; low/200; and flash). On high output, run time is 1 hour 30 minutes, but you can get 6 hours at the low setting and a claimed 18 hours in flash mode. A lithium ion battery is housed inside and is recharged with a USB cable, included with the light. When the battery gets to 5-10 percent of capacity, the light flashes and automatically switches to a lower setting to conserve battery life. The light can be attached to the handlebar or via a helmet mount (also included). -T. Ortega
