Gemini Lights Olympia
Weight: 404 grams, including six-cell battery
Technological advancements (and Asian manufacturing) have made great quality, ultra-bright LED lights and high-tech batteries widely available. This has simultaneously made lightweight, blindingly bright bike lights extremely affordable for those wanting to go to the dark side for more ride time or overnight races. Gemini Lights’ Olympia provides a 1,700 lumen torch from a light-head no larger than an SPD pedal.
Three CREE XM-L U2 LED emitters—the most efficient high-power LEDs on the market—light up this 78-gram flamethrower of a light. The Olympia is customizable for a variety of different uses; it allows a user to choose from 10 different brightness options (between 10 to 100 percent) and save them into a memory setting on the three-step switch.
On its brightest setting, the Olympia offers about two hours and 15 minutes of burn time with the stock four-cell battery. An upgradable six-cell battery improves that by another 1.5 hours (and adds just over 100 grams to the battery pack).
If the idea of nighttime riding has you curious or if you want a versatile commuting light, investing in a good light will elevate the experience from potentially disastrous to blissful.
At just under $300, the Olympia is a high-quality light at a reasonable price. Plus, the Olympia includes both helmet and bar mounts as well as a head belt for other nighttime adventures. No matter your mode of transport for those after-dusk excursions, the Gemini Olympia is an affordable and reliable choice. –J. Carr
