Specialized Stumpjumper: 25 years of Mountain Biking.

(March 5, 2010)

Commissioned by Specialized in celebration of the twenty-five year anniversary of their Stumpjumper mountain bike, this hardcover, 128-page, beautifully photographed and illustrated book is packed with historic old photos and classic stories.

However, the book offers much more than a flashback, and is best thought of as a rich timeline, as the Stumpjumper’s evolution is followed from day-one up until it’s current, high-tech full suspension incantation.

I particularly enjoyed the double page photo of Charles Kelly ripping California’s Repack descent in the mid 70’s on a then, state of the art clunker, complete with motorcycle brake levers and huge upright bars.

Another treat of “Specialized Stumpjumper: 25 years of Mountain Biking” was learning about the technology and at times trial by fire testing that went into early bike design. Plus, the old school suspension photos can’t be beat.

Much deserved homage is also paid to Ned Overend, as his brilliant career evolved with the advancement of the Stumpjumper and mountain bikes in general.

All in all, “Specialized Stumpjumper: 25 years of Mountain Biking” is a fun, interesting read, one that can be appreciated by any off road rider.
