Pearl Izumi Vertex Microsensor Bib Shorts

(June 5, 2010)

With this in mind, I felt more than fortunate to test out a set of Pearl Izumi Vertex Microsensor Bib Shorts ($140). (Pearl Izumi fist hit the U.S. market in the early eighties and quickly established itself as a major player with cutting edge designs and the ability to listen and adapt to the needs of the American rider.)

Upon pulling on the Vertex Microsensor bibs, the first thing I noticed was the sound fit offered buy their anatomic eight-panel design. This three dimensional, human shape meant the shorts felt like an extension of my skin. They were snug, like all cycling shorts should be, but expressed my every move with no binding.

Fit was further enhanced thanks to the highly breathable stretchy mesh used in the uppers and bib straps, while the legs stayed where I put them thanks to an ever so slightly rubberized leg elastic.

However, the meat of all short is in the padding…thankfully, the 3D Pro Stretch Chamois did not disappoint. This generous pad is a whopping 10mm thick under the sit bones and tapers to a more standard 8mm near its front. And thanks to Pearl Izumi’s unique manufacturing process, the density of the chamois changes: dense under the sits, soft up front.

The 3D Pro Stretch Chamois further impresses with its bacteria killing sliver anti-microbial ions and open celled foam nature that wicks moisture away from the skin. And dry cool skin equal’s comfort and a less likelihood of chaffing.

After a few months of riding, I am happy to report that Pearl Izumi has outdone themselves with the Izumi Vertex Microsensor Bib Shorts. The fit is exceptional, the chamois doles out the comfort, and the whole is package refreshingly durable.
