Pearl Izumi Impact Shorts
(April 5, 2010)After multiple backcountry outings, I am thankful to report that once again Pearl Izumi has a winner, as the Impact Shorts provide comfort, stretch, and breathability in a package that’s got street smart good looks.
Range of motion and initial comfort is possible thanks to the light, stretch woven fabric used in the short’s body. The material also supplies enough durability to ward off the occasional wreck.
Hiding beneath this outer layer is a stretchy mesh liner that eliminates nasty chaffing and holds the chamois in place. And because Pearl Izumi uses a seamless molding process when constricting the chamois, both its comfort and durability are excellent. (Men’s and women’s chamois version available.)
Performance is further aided by the Impact Shorts anatomic fit. They are just loose enough to provide nice air circulation and comfort, but not so baggy that extra martial may get caught up on the nose of your saddle when transitioning between standing and sitting.
However, I did find that if the shorts slid off my hips at all, they would get hung up on the saddle’s nose, so best to keep them fully hitched up. Two cargo style pockets with Velcro closures, ten-inch inseam, and a zippered fly with snap round out this fine product.
