Original Growler 2010 - 64-ounces of Pain, Suffering, and Fun

Kelly Magelky dethrones Travis Brown to take home all 64 Ounces of Glory. Melissa Thomas takes women's title

(May 30, 2010) GUNNISON, Colo.— Kelly Magelky lead the 350 racers up the opening climb of "Kill Hill" and was able to fend off previous year's winner Travis Brown while Melissa Thomas fended off endurance stars Sonya Looney and Jari Kirkland to take the women's title.

This 64 mile race is not for the faint of heart. It packs a first punch followed by a sneaky backhand. Most riders would agree that the climbs are deceptively grueling but the views are amazing and the top quality singletrack sends everyone home with a warm fuzzy feeling after they finally finish. Competitors go home with a big smile on their face to go with their cramping legs.

Hartman Rocks has long been a beacon for the Gunnison area mountain bikers. The draw created is slow to grow on you, but soon all you can think about is all the great ways you can link together the forty five plus trails that snake their way around the recreation area.

Dave Wiens, previous winner of the Leadville 100 and high-class, high-caliper racer, brewed up the idea of an endurance race in his backyard area of Hartman Rocks. He wanted to have an event that was just as much fun and it was difficult, and he has succeeded.

“This year’s race is quiet a bit harder than last,” says two time winner Travis Brown. “The direction we rode some of the trails made for grueling climbs, but I had a great time and will definitely be coming back next year.”

This year’s race filled up in under 2 days and is capped at 350 riders to maintain the quality of the singletrack experience. With 350 racers lined up at the start, the mass start looked more like a Tour de France stage then a mountain bike race. Ken Coleman of Gunnison, sent off the racers on their way to either 32 or 64 miles of pain, suffering and fun with the blast of a shot gun. As Mr. Coleman put it, “Alright racers! Saddle up! The first blast is a warning and the second one means GO!”

The start of dirt found racers cranking up Kill Hill at the base of the Hartman Rocks recreation area. The idea of sending the mass up the gnarly dirt road climb was to try and help string out the 350 racers before hitting singletrack.

The course lead racers on some of the best riding trails in the area. Trails like the Ridge Trail, Top of the World, Bambies, The Notch, Dirty Sock and the list goes on. The 32 mile lap left racers out on singletrack for more the 90 percent of the time.

As the front of the pack came around and started up the gradual climb of Top of the World the leading racers were no surprise. Kelly Magelky still held his front position with Travis Brown hot on his heals. Mafia Racing's Jake Wells kept these two high class racers within seconds of him. As the leaders took off over the top of the climb the masses of the rest of the race made their way up the climb. The lead group quickly put a big gap on the rest of the pack leaving the riders behind to battle the race course that demanded as much skill as it did strength and endurance.

Magelky kept the pressure on but was unable to shake Travis or Jake. As the trio rolled through the finish for their first lap, Brown had to stop for a quick mechanical. “I knew I was loosing a gap on the other two, but I figured they would crack and I could overtake them,” says Brown. “Magelky never did falter though. He is strong!”

“Kelly never really put on an attack, he just kept the throttle on up that first climb. We kept coming back together, but then he was just gone,” explains Jake Wells on what happened out on course. “After that I was just doing damage control. I didn’t know where Travis was but I knew he was coming.”

Brown ultimately overtook Wells to finish second. Wells took third followed by Peter Webber and Joseph Saperstein.

Magelky credited his performance on his ability to eat. Last year he hit a major wall because he did not eat or drink enough. The start of the second lap he could start to see an opportunity going uphill. Magelky was surprised to see a gap gaining over Jake and Travis. “I told myself if I can get to the top of the road climb coming out of Bambies without imploding, I think I can win this race. But it was soooo steep!”

Melissa Thomas of Boulder, Colo. outrode endurance experts Sonya Looney and Melissa Thomas to take the women's title.

Even though this race is extremely difficult, not only for your ability to get deep inside the pain cave, but also with it challenging climbs and rocky section, every racers had a big smile on their face coming across the finish line. More races should be designed like The Original Growler; pain, suffering and smiles.

The Original Growler, it is no easy task but you are sure to have fun!	Race organizer and mountain bike racing legend Dave Wiens gives the front line a slap of the hand just before the start.	Travis Brown shares a little words of wisdom with another racer on how to survive out on course.
Ken Coleman sent the racers on their way to a day of suffering and fun with the blast of a shot gun.	The race pack got a lead out from the police from the heart of Gunnison out to the Hartman Rocks Recreation Area just outside of town.	There is a reason it is called “Kill Hill”. The mass of racer grind their way up the opening hill.
Travis Brown kept it smooth and strong up the first major single track climb of the Top of the World.	The views of this race are hard to beat. It was pretty easy to ignore your screaming legs when you got to ride these trails.	Bradford Sims of Lafayette enjoys some smooth swooping single track of the Dirt Sock trail.
Kevin Wilder gets super back seat as he rolls through one of hundreds of rock technical descents out on course.	Brown lead the way for the leading pack up the grueling climb coming back out of Bambies trail. This four wheel drive rocky mess of a road was steep enough to make grown men cry.	Single speeds actually have three gears; stand up, sit down and get off! For many jumping on the saddle and getting their jog on proved better then suffering through pedaling up this insane climb.
The views never disappointed. The Growler is quickly becoming a classic Colorado endurance race, and it's not just because the race is hard.d	Brick Oven/Crested Butte Builders racer Matt Steinwand enjoys the fruit of his labors of climbing.	Greg Scanlan of Fort Collins keeps his eyes sharp through one of the funnest sections of the course. This 32 mile course lap had over 25 miles of single track.
Nate Bird keeps it smooth through one of the most challenging descents of the race known as The Notch. This section was no joke. Many racers opted to hop off the saddle and walk these extremely rock extremely technical section of downhill leading to the finish line.	The technical aspect of the course was only shortly behind the difficulty of endurance of the race course. Sean McCourt weaves his way through the rock fields leading into The Notch.	Gunnison local Michael Barns throws up a hand of excitement as he crosses the finish line after hammering out 64 miles of pure joyful suffering.
Even though the official timed finish was out at the base of Hartman Rocks, all the racers were required to ride back to town and check in at IOOF park were the fun continued with live music and catered food.
