Macky Franklin Blog: Fix a bent chain link

 

Because of my experiences this past weekend I decided to explain how to fix a bent chain link. The first method (no tools needed) is the method I used during the XC this past Saturday. It is a great trailside fix. But the second method is quite a bit easier if you're near your toolbox.

Disclaimer: This is a temporary fix. If you've bent a chain link, you should replace your chain as soon as you can. Otherwise you risk breaking it (and nobody likes that).

For those of you who don't like video tutorials (even ones that are under 2 minutes) or if you prefer stationary images, here are the step-by-step instructions (click each picture to see the accompanying directions for each step):

First Method (no tools needed):

Find the bent linkUsing the two adjacent links, make a “Z”Torque the Z by pulling towards you until the bent link
is straightTest that the link is
straight by back pedaling

Second Method (using Allen keys):

Get your Allen keys (I used a 2mm and a 3mm)Find the bent linkInsert the Allens into the two
adjacent linksTorque the two adjacent links using the Allen keys until the link is
straight
Check that the link is no longer bentTest that the link is straight by back pedaling
