Giro Prolight Helmet

(August 17, 2010)

Feathery, comfy and stylish. Giro proves that a light helmet can also mean a comfortable and good looking one with their new Prolight

Since the helmets have become mandatory in pro road cycling, helmet companies have been driven to make helmets lighter and just overall better than ever before. Giro has continued to push the envelop by introducing their new Prolight helmet. At 195 grams, it is the lightest helmet on the market. After hours in the saddle, the 50-100 gram weight savings from other high-end helmets, Prolight is barely noticeable perched atop your dome.

But light doesn’t always mean comfortable, but in the case of the Prolight, Giro utilized old technology in a new way. With Roc-Lock SL, the Roc-lock system (that keeps the helmet snug on your head) utilizes a pair of plastic supports joined together by an elastic strap. This feature cuts back a little on overall adjustment but still offers 3 circumference adjustment points, still doing its job particularly well.

Even if you are not in the Tour de France Peloton, the Prolight is a great helmet for those riders looking for the latest in lightweight helmet technology. It feels super stable even on super technical mountain bike rides. It would be great for an endurance athlete who is constantly having neck issues during long rides and races.

Giro Prolight Helmet

Prolight is light, but lacks the ventilation riders have come to expect from a high end helmet.Keeping with the Giro feel, Prolight has some features similar to other helmets in their line. Out back it looks similar to the ever popular Pneumo. The Roc-loc SL system is ultra minimal, but does the job.Offering only 3 circumference adjustments and the adjustable chinstrap, Giro shaved a lot of weight by cutting back on excess plastic bits.
Decreasing the amount of vents meant Giro would need to find another way to keep riders heads cool, insert deep channel ventilation. Keeping airflowing across the top of your head through the smaller sized vents. The Minimalist strap system is also easy to adjust. The Prolight is generally a light weight race helmet - probably intended for raod racing but is perfectly fit for offroad racing as well.
