CX Masters Worlds Day 2

As the storm that hit Louisville for the first day of racing developed further, the temperatures dropped overnight and turned the deep mud into treacherous ruts and slick icy corners. The race directors shortened the course by taking out a few of the steep run ups and descents, in an effort to shorten the lengthy lap times and cut down on the need for medical assistance. Still, the first heats of the day saw rider after rider hit the hard frozen ground as they searched for safe passage around the course. Before the first World Cahampionship Race in the afternoon, the course crew was frantically moving stakes and tape, and bringing out the heavy artillery to scrape some parts of the course.

This did indeed improve lap times and allow racers to remain on the bikes for a bit longer eac lap, but the course conditions reamained sketchy throughout the day.  Course tape and stakes could be heard snapping all around the course as riders were suddenly thrown off their lines by four inch deep ruts and patches of ice thinly disguised by small amounts of snow. Although there were no serious injuries, very few came away unscathed.

Aaron "Boups" Bouplon from Boulder CO, is no
stranger to tough course conditions, ridiing and running strong to a second place finish in 35-39 group heat race.Although these ruts
appear to be the consistency of peanut butter, they are in fact frozen solid, and very unforgiving.More action from the 35-39
group. The frozen conditions did make the long sand pit rideable. This is the first long straight right off the pavement.
Most groups made it through without any major carnage. Some ran it and some rode it, either way it was tough
going. Not only frozen but off camber too!Wind chill hovered around 0 degrees throughout the day
with a wicked cutting wind.Digging this 30-34 racers jersey tribute to Sex
Pistols!Chill...American Andrew Reardon had
taken the lead from eventual winner Belgian Sven van Eyndt when he went down hard on this icy descent.Van Eyndt just coming into view
as other 30-34 racers tackle the flyover.Riding some of these long frozen rut sections was a
daunting prospect.Easy on the brakes!Unlike Day 1, these
washers lay quiet and frozen.
