Betty Bike Gear: Gear to Get you Going
(March 29, 2010)How often have you gotten a flat, looked in your bag and realized you forgot one key tool? Or maybe it’s been so long since you fixed a flat, you forgot the best technique for a quick tire change. Betty Bike Gear, a new company based in Ridgway, Colo., is focused on getting you prepared, self-sufficient and on the road.
Perhaps the most clever product from Betty Bike Gear is its flat tire kit. The kit, a water bottle filled with everything you need to fix a flat, will have you shaking your head, saying “Why didn’t I think of this?” Inside the 23 oz. water bottle you’ll find a CO2 inflator and cartridge, two tire levers, glueless patches inside the levers and tearproof/waterproof instructions (both for fixing a flat and a broken chain). With all the flat-fixin’ pieces all contained together, you simply put it in your jersey pocket or right on the bike. No more embarrassing cell phone calls to the spouse from the side of the road.
Betty Bike Gear also offers a floor pump, the Venus. In another clever move, the pump has instructions on the pump barrel on how to use the value and distinguish between Presta and Schrader valves. A color-coded inflation gauge indicates the inflation ranges for different tire types. An AutoValve dual head fits any valve size, and a padded steel base keeps the pump stable and quiet when in use.
This company has the right idea by educating and gearing cyclists up so they’re not caught unprepared. Although it markets its product to women, these products will suit any new or experienced cyclist who wants to be prepared and knowledgeable on and off the road.
