Neither wind nor sand could stop racing at the Half and Original Gunnison Growler.

(May 26-27) Gunnison, Colo. - If there were one defining characteristic of the 2012 Gunnison Growler, it would be the wind.  A sandy course would come in strong second, but the incessant wind for both Saturday’s Half Growler and Sunday’s Full Growler took its toll on racers and spectators alike.

Wet, slippery conditions welcome racers at Trans-Sylvania Epic's hardest stage

After Sunday’s stage 1 time trial that put returning champion Jeremiah Bishop (Cannondale Factory Racing) just over one minute ahead of Barry Wicks (Kona Bikes) in overall GC, all eyes were on the two World Cup veterans to see who would emerge victorious in the treacherous 38 mile second stage of the Trans-Sylvania Mountain Bike Epic, a stage considered by most to be the hardest and most challenging.

Tubeless rocks! Especially tubeless with sealant. Not only does it get rid of annoying flats like goat heads, glass, and small rocks, but it allows you to run lower tire pressures without risking pinch flats. Personally, I run WTB TCS (Tubeless Compatible System) tires (26 PSI front, 28 PSI rear), but as long as you're using sealant, you can run most tubeless ready tires tubeless if you have tubeless-compatible wheels. My one issue with tubeless used to be installing the tires.

(May 6, 2012) Pinos Altos NM- The final Stage of this years Tour of the Gila was, as always, the infamous Gila Monster Road Race. With five KOM’s and nearly 10,000ft. of climbing, this is the day that can make or break the tour for any team or rider.  For the Bontrager/Livestrong Team, it could have gone either way, but the team was coming into the final stage of the tour with plenty of momentum.

Inside the Gila with Bontrager/Livestrong - Day 4

The Bontrager Boys are Ready To Rumble

(May 5, 2012) Silver City NM-Day four of the 2012 Tour of the Gila is always a favorite as the Silver City Crit brings out lots of local folks, arts and crafts booths, food courts, and a beer garden right at the finish line. After the Bontrager Livestrong Teams strong perfomance so far, the main goal of todays crit was to stay safe and hold their positions. Mission accomplished. Everybody finished in the pack and no one went down. The stage is set for a big time throw down on the final stage, with Joe dombrowski poised to take a spot on the podium. The team is behind him and ready to do everything they can to launch him in that direction.

(May 3, 2012) FORT BAYARD, NM - Day number two of the 2012 Tour of the Gila started much like the 2011 version for the riders on the Bontrager/Livestrong team. The young climber from Virginia, Joe Dombrowski was fitted into the Best Young Rider jersey as Axel made his rounds, making sure everybody was ready to race. The rest of the team went through their last minute motions before the start of the Inner Loop Stage, which would take them along a 127-kilometer course and three category 3 climbs.

Today marks the ½ way point of our trip in a manner of speaking. The mission for the trip was to arrive in Port Angeles with Team Geronimo to report on the race and for the guys to compete in the DH. With the race-weekend over, we had a decision to make concerning return-route, the completion of our Ride Guide for Mountain Flyer was our priority on the way out, and as we were looking at a possible overlap-situation related to stops we'd discussed for our return-route, some further planning was required.

(May 2, 2012) Silver City, NM.-The 26th annual Tour of the Gila kicked off on Wednesday under cloudless skies and warm temperatures. With SRAM as the new title sponsor and the UCI upgrading the Gila to a 2.2 level event, this years tour has attracted the deepest field of talent in years. Team director Gord Fraser is back with his Competitive Cyclist Racing Team, Frankie Andreu is heading up the Kenda 5 Hour Energy team, Burke Swindlehurst is in charge of the Jamis-Sutter Home team, and Axel Merckx returns with his team of U23 riders who took last years Tour of the Gila by storm.
